There is a Childhood Revival on the Horizon
Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about childhood “revivals.” The Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Drake and Josh, and Big Time Rush have been rumored for comebacks since the day of each show’s cancellation. And these rumors are slowly proving to be true. The Jonas Brothers premiered their first single, “Sucker,” on March 1, 2019, six years after the band split. So, this is a thing now: One childhood dream reborn, check.
On March 29, 2019, Miley Cyrus posted on social media with her hair styled as Hannah Montana’s wig, and sang along to the famed “Best of Both Worlds” song, the theme for the acclaimed tv show. The weekend she released this footage marked 13 years since the show’s first airing in 2006.
So, what does this mean for everyone?
Looks like we’re going to be receiving that childhood revival! Finally!
The early 2000’s were certainly a big part of many lives. Generationally speaking, I would say it almost, if not definitely, had a huge role in molding teens and young adults from the ages of 17-22 today.
Personally, I see a generational divide in more than just “millennials” vs. “gen z.” I will have to go into detail about this in another blog post, but for sake of argument, I see the generational divide as such: 1990-1997, 1998-2003, 2004-2010 (I won’t categorize beyond that point as most generations are defined by decade, and I can’t speak for the ideals and values of a generation not yet fully formed).
Why do I see the divide like this?
Well, generations are defined by their beliefs, ideals, motives, and environment. Kids born between 1990 and 1997 were the real 90’s kids. They grew up with cool skateboarding trends, popular 90’s tv shows (think Rugrats) and music of that era. These are millennials. Kids born between 1998 and 2003 grew up with sidewalk chalk which would later turn into iPads as they got older. They would remember a time before technology, but would also be tech-savvy. This is the generation that is most screaming about the 2000’s childhood revival. And of course, kids born between 2004 and 2010 are the most tech-savvy, and considered the infamous Gen Z.
This is my current understanding. There are a lot of articles that disagree, and a lot that do.
But aside from all of this, let me explain why this matters. There is a whole generation of kids, separate from the 90’s kids and separate from Gen Z who are about to relive the BEST part of their childhood!
In my understanding, The Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana are back. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a High School Musical Reunion movie or if BTR made a big comeback.
Not to mention, there are more solidifying rumors on a new Drake and Josh series.
This is all pretty insane to once-children-now-adult fans!
There have been 90’s revivals before this, like “Fuller House,” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” And I think that the whole reason the 2000’s were so big was because of the 90’s influence. 90’s kids is a thing. And people love to relive that part of their childhood. We’ve seen a few of the 90’s revivals. Some have been pretty successful, doing justice to the original show. However, others have sort of come out as a disgrace to that generation (I hate the new Kim Possible movie, and I was not a fan of “Girl Meets World”). So, it’s no wonder that 2000’s nostalgia is so big. And now, it’s coming back!
My only hope is that these recreations prove to be decent, honoring their original sources. Again, some 90’s revivals aren’t terrible.
I am excited to relive my childhood, honestly. I’m absolutely bouncing in my seat to see my idols from 2006 come back to the big screen. I’m hoping this will inspire a more prominent 90’s revival as well, seeing as it was the OG in childhood molding. I’m part of that generation who was caught in the middle, so I can recall a number of 90’s things that I would love to see come back.
What do you think? Is a 2000’s childhood revival really on the verge? Will BTR, High School Musical, and Drake and Josh really come back? What do you think of the generational gap? I’d love to hear your opinions so please comment below!

I love your take on the generation divisions, and I completely agree. And, I had no idea about Hannah Montana, but that makes me so excited!
ReplyDeleteSorry I’m so late at responding! But yes! I want to do a blog post about the generational divide that is more in depth. And I’m so excited! Hannah Montana was my life when I was a kid
