This month kicked off the start of summer and 1 out of 2 moves for me. It’s been crazy! I’ve been working more, learning more, and doing more...except for keeping up on my reading and my blog apparently. Is it bad that I’ve only read one book this month? ONE! I’m an abomination!
So, I’ve decided to not only review the book I’ve been reading, but also some articles and smaller things. I read every day. I just don’t read a book every day. A lot of what I read is from the internet on my phone. And that’s okay!
Enjoy this slightly unconventional “what I’m reading this month” post and hope that July proves to be a bit more...ordinary.

Title: Asymmetry
Author: Lisa Halliday

This book was very different from books I tend to read. I prefer fiction and fantasy stories. Now, this IS a fiction novel. However it’s realistic fiction. I avoid realistic and nonfiction like the plague. Don’t ask why. I’m still not sure.
The book is set up in three parts: the first following a young writer and her love with a well renowned author, the second following an Iraqi-American man and his life between the two countries, and the third about the well renowned authors success to becoming a Nobel prize winner. What was unique about this book was in how it was told.
The conversations were quick and simple, not at all revealing. The style in which the book was written was in separated chunks by scene and there was hardly any description or detail. It was sweet but also a bit odd. It wasn’t my favorite, though I admired the modernity of it.
Overall, the book was pretty good. The story was fitting for this time period (it took place in 2003 and 2008ish). I don’t know if it’s a ‘recommend’ from me, but it was certainly very interesting.

Title: Who Cooked the Last Supper?
Author: Rosalind Miles

I haven’t actually read this book, however, I might put it on my list. I’ve read excerpts of it and from what I’ve seen, it’s pretty good. To be fair, I’ve only read the “interesting parts” and I haven’t been able to get a good feel for the book yet, but I found it rather interesting.
The book talks about some interesting evolutionary traits that evolved in humans due to women as well as stories in women’s history that have since been more or less forgotten.
One interesting fact from the book: right handedness came about as women began to carry children on their left side, using their right hand to work. The reason for being on the left side is due to the fact that the heart is on that side of the body.

This last one isn’t a conventional book whatsoever. My favorite thing to read about deals with questions like “why are humans like they are?” “Why do people need purpose?” “What does it mean to be human?” Etc. I absolutely LOVE the tumblr posts about humans being considered “space orcs.” (Look it up it's more interesting than it sounds!)
There are tons of articles about how humans evolved with certain mannerisms (even over the last hundred years), how language has evolved, culture, religion, sexuality, etc. It’s my favorite thing. And I wish I saved every article and could just paste them in links here but I might have to save that for another day.

What I’m trying to say is, I’ve been reading, just not the way I normally read.

Anyway, I hope this post was “decent.” I know it’s nowhere as thrilling as posts before it. However, I encourage you to check out these two books.

My poetry book The Lights are on but Nobody’s Home is available on Amazon for $9.99!

There is a reason meditation is often presented in video or podcast form. I’m not sure how well the ideas and instructions on how I meditate will relay through text in a blog post. However, I’ve been asked before “how do you meditate” by a few people, which encouraged me to write this post.
I want to preface this with the fact that I haven’t been meditating very long. I started meditating in 2017 (I think). I’ll be honest, I had no idea what I was doing or if I was achieving anything. Since then, I’ve certainly grown and mastered a few simple meditation techniques. Though, I don’t meditate regularly enough to be considered a “pro.”
Anyway, this post is going to be about what I consider “grounding meditation.” The majority of the time when I meditate, I focus on relaxing my body and relying on my senses to help me feel more “present.” So, without further ado, let’s jump in.

For this mediation, you’ll need a quiet space and about 15-30 mins.

This meditation is all about grounding yourself to your environment. It’s about being present and calm in your current state of life. Grounding meditation aids in anxiety and depression relief, and helps to calm and clear the mind.

  1. Get into a comfortable position
The first and most important step is to get into a comfortable position. If you are not comfortable, then the meditation will not be either. For me personally, I like to lay down with my hands on my stomach or on by sides. Many people like to sit cross legged with their hands on their knees. However, that isn’t a super comfortable position for me. Do whatever you need to so long as you're comfortable.
  1. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths
Close your eyes. In order to relax, take a few deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth. I like to do this about five times or more. To be honest, I take as many breaths as needed in order to steady my breathing and to relax.
  1. Focus on relaxing each part of your body
A lot of people worry that they’ll fall asleep while trying to meditate. This is almost impossible if you are doing a “grounding meditation.” This meditation isn’t about having an empty mind, it’s about relaxing and being aware of your environment.
This step can take a little while but it is crucial in grounding yourself. I recommend starting either from your head and working down, or your feet working up. You can really do this however you like. In order to do this step properly, focus on a body part (like your right leg) and let yourself feel it relax/getting heavy. Do this with each part of your body until you are fully relaxed.
  1. Go back to focusing on your breathing
I typically do this in between relaxing my body parts but if you’re new to meditation, I’d recommend just going back to focusing on this after relaxing your body. Do the same breath in through the nose and out the mouth a few times until you feel relaxed and calm.
  1. Focus on your senses
This is the step where the real grounding begins. For this step, I will walk through two senses but the goal is to go through all five. Let’s start with your sense of hearing. Sit for a few minutes and listen to the small sounds of your environment. In what ways do they calm you? Do they aid in your connection with your current environment? Take a minute to appreciate any silence or noises just beyond the door or window where you are.
Take your time moving between senses and really try to appreciate each one. The next sense I will walk through is sight. With my eyes closed, I like to paint an image in my head of my current environment. How well do I know it? What small details can I pick out? Envision your surroundings in your mind. Take a few minutes on this before moving on.

  1. Ground yourself to your current environment
This step is more of a recap. After focusing on each of your senses individually, go back and think about how grounded you feel to your environment. Do you feel connected with the space you are in? For me personally, I like to feel connected to living where I do (as I often meditate in my home). Outdoors, I focus on how I feel connected to nature. I focus on my own humanity. For me, this is calming.
  1. Clear your mind/ask yourself one question
Lastly, you can choose one of two routes. For new meditators, it can be hard to clear your mind so if you don’t feel comfortable with this, choose route two.

Route one: clear your mind. I like to start by thinking of something light and airy, like clouds or feathers. Then I move on to clearing my mind (not necessarily thinking of nothing but of focusing on being calm and “clean”).

Route two: instead of clearing your mind, you can also ask yourself one pivotal question that has been on your mind as of late and attempt to answer it in your calm and collected state.

  1. Relax your muscles one more time
Before ending the meditation, opening your eyes, and getting up from that comfortable spot, I like to focus on each body part one last time, relaxing them or even stretching them. If you started say, from the feet up, then “undo” it all by going from the head down. I like doing it this way to sort of regroup after meditation.

And of course feel free to end the meditation whenever and however you like. Do what makes you feel good. I like to stand up, stretch some more, and grab a glass of water.

This meditation is all about grounding yourself to your environment. It’s about being present and calm in your current state of life. Grounding meditation aids in anxiety and depression relief, and helps to calm and clear the mind.

My summer bucket list

Alright, so it’s finally summer. The weather is beautiful. Life is thriving. And my to-do list is never ending. I’ve found myself trying to document as much content and action as possible from my adventures and little journeys (most of it on Instagram). And let me tell you, there is A LOT to post about. BUT! I wanted to dive in just a little further with a list of things I want to do before summer is officially over.

Before I get into it, I want to say that aside from the more “fun” aspects of summer, I intend to get my book in stores, move (twice), get college figured out for the fall, and get on with my book give away on insta and a few more project reveals.

So my summer is looking pretty jam packed. But for the sake of this blog post, I wanted to list a few summer ideas for those who are looking for a way to cure boredom and for myself, as a “bucket list” of must do’s.

So without further ado, let’s get into it!

  1. Go to the lake or beach
Alright, I’m going to be honest and say that I don’t get to the Ocean very often. I live in the middle of Indiana. The Ocean is a bit of a drive away for me. However, Lake Michigan isn’t too far away, making it a good day trip!
I have some big plans to go to Lake Michigan for a sort of “beach” day. It’s a good little family vacation idea or date idea with the SO so, this is definitely up top on my bucket list for the summer.

  1. Go to the fair
What would summer be without a few fairs and carnivals?
Here in Indy, there are two fairs I look forward to each year: the Marion county fair and the State Fair. I have also been to the Johnson and Monroe county fairs.
I personally love to see all of the colorful lights after dark, eat funnel cakes and elephant ears, laugh with friends, and ride some rides.
My favorite thing about fairs is the food. It’s really bad for you, and typically pretty wacky, but I love it!

  1. Camping!
So, until I met Matt, I hadn’t done much camping, and the camping I had done should probably have been considered “glamping.”
It’s really fun to explore a new wildlife park or forest, put up a tent, hike, swim, kayak, barbecue, and roast marshmallows over the fire. I am a fairly outdoorsy kind of person so camping is always a riot. I’m definitely looking forward to this for the summer.

  1. Explore a new city/town
I’m going to be honest, before I got a car and a job, I hadn’t been outside of Indy beyond Greenwood, and I only ever went to Greenwood maybe twice a year. Now I LIVE in Greenwood and have explored almost every inch of it. And of course, Indy has been well traversed by me.
My goal for the summer is to explore more towns and cities near me. I want to explore Franklin, Mooresville, Carmel, and Columbus. I’ll be moving north in a few months so I need to get going on these explorations!
I really like exploring new places because even though I’m only thirty minutes away from home, the culture and life is still different from my own. I don’t know. It’s just fun.

  1. Try 5 new eateries
This could go along with exploring a new city/town. Each time I go somewhere new, I have to try out a new restaurant or diner. I love eating new foods and finding new places.
I leave reviews on google at most places (I know, I’m weird) and I’ve received some good feedback from them. I’m actually considering trying some new places out and maybe reviewing them here for those who are interested.

  1. Picnics
This is the cheapest thing on my summer bucket list, I think, and still one of the greatest. I love picnics, or even cookouts. My family does this all the time and I absolutely adore it.
Since I’ll be back with my family this summer, I’m excited to get back into cookouts and picnics with them on our days off.
I don’t know why eating outside is so fun to me. But it is. And I’m looking forward to some quality family, friend, and SO time.

  1. More outdoor reading/writing
This is one of those bucket list items that feels more like a necessity than a “eh maybe.” I have slacked SO MUCH on reading. How on earth am I supposed to maintain a “what I’m reading this month” series if I am not reading?!
This summer, my goal is to read at least 2-3 books each month. I know I can do it. I have time. And of course, I have the beautiful outdoors to enjoy. Laying under the sun with a good book is the best feeling in the world.

Check out my “What I’m reading” series!

  1. Fireworks
This is not JUST a Fourth of July thing. I love setting off fireworks the week before, after, and weeks later. Yes. I’m that person. I love taking pictures of the sparks and editing them. I love hanging out with friends and waving around sparklers. I’m certainly looking forward to this.
I still have some sparklers from last year that need to be put to good use and honestly, I’ve considered using them in the middle of June because...why not?

  1. Drive in movie nights
I’ve only been to the drive in once, to see End game. It was amazing. Unfortunately it was cold outside so we had to keep the car running with the heater but I loved every minute of it.
I hope to do this again this summer. Maybe with Matt. Maybe with some friends. Maybe with my fam. Or all three. I just found it to be a really welcoming experience. It was nicer than sitting at home and watching a movie inside on the tv. That’s what I did all winter.

  1. The zoo!
The zoo hasn’t always been something I really enjoyed. Weird right? Since I’ve got a job and a car, it’s become a more exciting day trip. Last year, I took my sister to the zoo and it was amazing! It was great to have a little sister date, just the two of us.
I’ve also been to the Cincinnati zoo with Matt and that was incredible. That zoo is beautiful and full of variety. It was a huge step up compared to Indianapolis. However, Indy has a really cool dolphin program and orangutan exhibit.
This summer, I would love to revisit the Cincinnati zoo as well as the zoo in downtown Indy.

So that’s it! That’s my summer bucket list! There is much more but I decided it’d be simpler to include 10 of my favorites!
